About

I just graduated with an M.A. in theology from ACU and will begin PhD work in SMU's Graduate Program in Religious Studies in August '11. My area is systematic/philosophical theology with connections to medieval and patristic thought. I'm interested in soteriology, epistemology, canonical theism, and thus the development of theological method/epistemology over the history of Christianity.

In my thesis I have attempted to construct an epistemological approach to soteriological theories based on a virtue/value-based epistemological model that treats understanding rather than knowledge as the primary epistemic desideratum for theological theories. This allows critical but positive appropriation of multiple theories/models without lapsing into a facile relativism or pragmatism.

I also argue that this model can potentially make sense of some of the differences between modern and pre-modern theology by considering two pre-modern examples (Anselm of Canterbury and Athanasius of Alexandria). I try to show that the implicit epistemology in these two examples is more properly aimed at something like understanding (that is, an internalized grasp or appreciation of some dynamic or relationship) rather than what we call knowledge (true justified/warranted/what-have-you belief).
